North Charleston Real Estate

Historically, North Charleston is best known for its military muscle, which dates back to the early 1900s when the U.S. Navy purchased Chicora Park and developed the Charleston Navy Shipyard. From 1901 until its closing in 1996, the Shipyard and Naval Base provided numerous jobs, financially fueled the economy, and moved numerous residents to the region. Today, North Charleston commerce continues to propel the region into a prosperous metropolis and solidify its status as an industrial hub. Maintaining its military reputation, the Joint Charleston Base manages three seaports, two civilian airfields, and many miles of railroad and coastline. Additionally, the Joint Base trains naval nuclear operators, supports airdrops and air lifts, and provides warfighter support. Nearby, the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) provides authoritative technical support and design for military commands. Other North Charleston based businesses like Boeing, West Rock Corporation (formerly Mead Westvaco), Southern Industries, Detyens Shipyard, and Keystone Automotive all contribute to the economic wealth of the greater Charleston region.
